The writer is currently part of a research project with the University of Melbourne that is quantifying all the data elements that can project this.

Please note that all references to speed and acceleration is not actually travelling beyond any road speed limit or unsafe driving practices.

Speed Advantage in Urban Environments

Urban transportation is characterized by frequent stops, short distances, and heavy traffic. In these conditions, electric trucks outperform their diesel counterparts in several ways:

1.    Instant Torque and Acceleration: Electric trucks are powered by electric motors that deliver instant torque. This allows them to accelerate more quickly from a standstill, making them better suited to the stop-and-go nature of urban driving. This rapid acceleration can result in a travel time speed up to 20% faster than diesel trucks, which struggle with lag due to their internal combustion engines needing to build up power gradually.

2.    Regenerative Braking: Electric trucks use regenerative braking systems, which convert kinetic energy back into stored energy in the battery. This not only improves energy efficiency but also enhances braking performance and reduces wear on the braking system, allowing for smoother and more responsive driving in traffic-heavy urban environments.

 

 

Economic Benefits

Time is money and the benefit of performing a transport task quicker with an Electric Truck can also be measured in substantial economic benefits to a business. If a typical urban transport application is used as an example with 25 delivery stops per day/shift that takes approximately 7 hours (420 minutes) and saving 20% of this in time with Electric Truck efficiency

We have saved up to 84 minutes per day/shift. Add together the hourly cost of the driver and truck of around $65 per hour and you can start to see savings of $90 per day or $21,000 per annum approximately in economic benefits.

Out it another way, if you have 10 Diesel trucks performing your freight task today, then its very feasible that you will only require 8 Electric Trucks. There are many ways to look and quantify the Electric Truck efficiency over Diesel
